The paraphernalia is actually means the equipment that attached with panggung include the following:
- The white screen (Kelir)
- Banana stems (Batang Pisang)
- A lamp (Lampu)
- A set of skin puppets (Wayang)
White Screen (Kelir)
This is the video of Kelir installation process.
The completely open front of the panggung is stretched a white muslin screen known as a kelir.
On to this the dalang (puppeteer) projects the shadows of his figures during a performance.
This screen is mounted on a wooden or metal frame, which is then affixed to the panggung in such a manner that the screen tilts inwards slightly,facing downwards.
Kelir is usually completed with a colored border,tassels or other decorative features.
Banana Stems
A pair of banana stems (batang pisang) serve as bases on which the puppets used during a performance as well as reserve figures are pierced by means of their handles.The stems are place on the panggung floor immediately behind the kelir.
By positioning his puppets on these, the dalang is able to show the status of his host of characters as well as the relationships between them.
In more practical terms the positioning of the figures on batang pisang enables a dalang to manipulate several figures simultaneously.
The Lamp
Suspended from the top screen centre is a lamp (lampu). It reaches to about the height of the dalang's face, as he takes his position sitting cross-legged on the panggung floor.
In the past oil or paraffin lamps were used.
In Kelantan these have totally been replaced by electric bulbs. A decorative wooden frame holds the lamp in position while also shielding the puppeteer's face from the direct glare and heat of the lamp.
Skin Puppets (Wayang)
A basic wayang kulit puppet set consist of approximately sixty puppets (wayang). Most of these represent the principal or secondary characters from the Hikayat Maharaja Wana.
Other,which are non-specific in character,represent sages and clowns,warriors,ogres and giants, as well as monsters and animals in addition to a small number of stage properties such as palaces,trees and forests.
The most important puppet due to its inherent symbolism and function in a performance,is that the tree or leaf-shaped pohon beringin which appears on screen at the opening and closing of wayang kulit performance.
